Practical is a Michigan based filmmaking team led by JohnPaul Morris. Practical was established in 2009 as a commercial production company that branched into feature story development in 2015 and feature film production in 2019. Today, the team produces commercial projects, feature films, and operates as a Filmsupply contributor, licensing footage to clients like Apple, BMW, Aston Martin, PBS, and Facebook.
Though we value versatility, we specialize in creating engaging concepts that are emotive and human.
Practical believes in maximizing the creative potential of every project/film through exemplary efficiency. We value flexibility and intention with an emphasis on the application of cinematic theory and a well-developed film aesthetic. That really just means research, sketchbooks, cameras, research, screen time, and running wild.
Practical has quickly grown into a multifaceted creative effort that brings in a broad network of filmmakers, Michigan and beyond. As the scope and ambition of our projects and films continues to increase, so must the level of collaboration and creative engagement.
JohnPaul Morris is a writer/director from Traverse City, Michigan. Since starting Practical in 2009, he has used the platform to direct projects for Merrell, the NBA, short films Future Kings and Find Me Up North as well as the feature length comedy Quicksand, currently in post.
DIRECTOR
Katie Fox-Webb is a producer from Akron Ohio, attending highschool with Lebron James. After graduating with a degree in film, Katie works from Grand Rapids, Michigan and has produced for the NBA, Gerber, Amway, and was Locations Manager for The End Of The Tour.
PRODUCER
Jake Burgess is a cinematographer/ editor/creative director/gaffer/ associate producer wunderkind. He operates the production company Cardboard Robot and has been working with Practical since high school. He’s won the presitgious award for being the best.
ASSOCIATE PRODUCER
Brian Raetz is a Michigan filmmaker who recently has taken over the role of casting director for all of Practical’s commercial and narrative work. Brian also worked as 1st Assistant Director on Practical’s first feature comedy, Quicksand, currently in post production.
